The RSPO certification

The RSPO certification

Palm oil is an ingredient of some of our products. It gives them a creamy consistency and smoothness. It is also a taste carrier and, thanks to its neutrality, does not overpower the other flavours.

Palm oil and its environmental impact

In recent years, palm oil has been one of the most controversial ingredients used in production, mainly for environmental reasons. Many growers continue to acquire it in an unsustainable way, destroying rainforests, disturbing the ecosystem, ruining grasses and rich vegetation, destroying the habitat of local animals. One solution to these problems is to change the way this raw material is sourced. Responsible management of plantations is subject to certification, which confirms the application of strict requirements so that the crops do not adversely affect the environment.

What does it mean that oil is RSPO-certified?

The RSPO (Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil) certification system brings together palm oil growers, producers, sellers and representatives of the FMCG industry, as well as environmental foundations and non-governmental institutions of the world. The task of the organisation is to counteract the negative effects of oil palm cultivation and to promote the production and purchase of palm oil which is produced in an ethical manner, without harming the local population.

Wedel with RSPO certification

Since December 2020, Wedel has held an RSPO certificate in the Mass Balance (MB) standard. The responsible sourcing of raw materials from certified sources is part of our CSR (corporate social responsibility) strategy and is our priority. In accordance with the standard requirements in the Mass Balance model, we monitor the quantity of certified oil in our products, and independent auditors confirm the compliance of our process with the RSPO standard. More than 50% of the palm oil supplied to us – also in complex raw materials – comes from controlled plantations.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Each year, Wedel will undergo an independent audit aimed at verifying the weight of the certified oil purchased and its content in our certified end products. Such verifications are carried out at every stage of the supply chain of certified palm oil – from the plantation to the producer such as Wedel.
  • Oil certification has a positive impact not only on the environment but also on the product itself. It improves the quality of the raw material, for example by supervising the proper use of pesticides, the proper harvesting and transport of fruits, which limits damage to them and changes in their quality, and the precise control of production parameters.
  • Due to the negative perception of palm oil, attempts are being made to boycott it, but any attempt to replace the palm oil used in food products and cosmetics, e.g. with coconut or rapeseed oil, has consequences in the form of even greater environmental degradation. Replacing the oil will not solve the problems, but merely shift them to other regions of the world (where the plantations are located), generate an increase in greenhouse gas emissions and pose a threat to protected fauna and flora. The palm used in the production of palm oil is the most efficient oil plant.

The abandonment of palm oil or any attempts to replace it with other oils lacks economic and environmental justification.

Redesign of Ptasie Mleczko® 2020

Redesign of Ptasie Mleczko® 2020

E. Wedel has forever entered the history of Polish creative graphics. In 1926 Jan Wedel invited Leonetto Capiello, a popular poster artist called the "father of modern advertising" to create a modern symbol of the company. To continue this tradition, we invited young illustrators to cooperate with us, who helped us refresh the image of marshmallows covered in chocolate well-known by Poles for generations.
In 2020 E.Wedel chocolates and Ptasie Mleczko® marshamallows has undergone a real metamorphosis. The changed design emphasizes the appetizing of Wedel products and encourages you to reach for chocolate delicacies. The packaging has gained new colors and heroes, characters of a boy and a zebra, who represent various moments of everyday pleasure.

WHY BOY AND ZEBRA?

WHY BOY AND ZEBRA?

Jan Wedel, one of the three founding fathers of the E.Wedel brand, was a very innovative person. Both when it comes to product novelties and marketing activities. It was Jan Wedel who had the image of a boy on a zebra created.

The first image of a Boy on a Zebra; ordered by Jan Wedel, was created by Leonetto Cappiello in 1926.

The original poster presents a zebra: a reference to Ghana, from where cocoa for E.Wedel’s chocolate production is obtained, along with a boy who has 3 bars of chocolate on his back: milk, lightly dark, and a dark one, symbolising diversity of the portfolio.

In 2020 we used storytelling and placed our Brand Heroes on the packaging.

E.WEDEL Powered by electricity from wind farms 2020

E.WEDEL Powered by electricity from wind farms 2020

LOTTE Wedel has signed a contract with TAURON for the purchase of electricity from wind farms. The transition to using 100% renewable electricity is part of Wedel's planned CSR course of action, according to which the company responds to local and global challenges as a responsible producer, employer and partner.
- Climate change is one of the most important global challenges today. Our goal is responsible management of environmental impact and undertaking long-term ecological initiatives, among others by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The transition to using only renewable energy is another step within our CSR strategy and "climate action", in line with global sustainable development goals. This is possible thanks to the cooperation with our partner, TAURON Sprzedaż, which has tailored the offer to our needs - explains Maciej Herman, Managing Director of LOTTE Wedel.
Conducting business activities with care for the environment results from the tradition and inspiration of the company's founders, especially Jan Wedel. In addition to climate projects, Wedel is involved in local initiatives such as the Wedel Run, the Polish-German Gardens project, aimed at revitalizing parts of the Skaryszewski Park, hives on the roof of the Wedel factory, etc. The company also runs educational campaigns for employees on environmental issues and organizes activation campaigns for the local community.

LOTTE WEDEL ACCESSES THE POLISH COALITION FOR SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL 2019

LOTTE WEDEL ACCESSES THE POLISH COALITION FOR SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL 2019

WWF is establishing the Polish Coalition for Sustainable Palm Oil recognizing the RSPO (Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil) certification. Coalition Members pledge to use only sustainable palm oil by 2023. LOTTE Wedel, as part of developing the corporate social responsibility strategy, has become one of the signatories of the declaration.

An alternative solution to the use of palm oil of uncertain origin and the method of obtaining it is to use palm oil with RSPO Certificate. Such oil has the same physicochemical properties and possibilities of application, however, it is associated with significantly less negative impact on global biodiversity, as well as climate change.

"I believe that conducting business activities should respect the external environment, including the natural environment, because each of us is part of the ecosystem and has an impact on its condition. We are in the process of preparing the certification of the palm oil we use for production and we realize how many challenges we have in this area, having such a diversified portfolio. As a responsible company, we listen to the voice of the environment and are eager to participate in activities aimed at optimizing existing processes, which is reflected, among others, in joining the coalition" - says Aleksandra Kusz vel Sobczuk, LOTTE Wedel Corporate Communication Manager.
